Did Tite Kubo base the shinigami of the Gotei 13 on the angels in religion?
(Subject to Change, Under Development)
Considering their role in the story as protectors of Soul Society and balancers of the spiritual world being similar to that of angels, I believe some shinigami could have been based off certain angels. The most obvious connection is between the captain shinigami and the archangels.
Comparing them and drawing their closest equivalents:
Archangel Michael = Hitsugaya
- Both are supposedly the most powerful of their kind (Gin says
Hitsugaya was the embodiment of the heavenly guardian), and serve as
military field commanders (Hitsugaya choose to be stationed in the real
world against the Arrancar threat).
- From Hitsugaya's character, he is very chivalrous, and Michael was named as a patron of chivalry.
- Appearance-wise, Hitsugaya grows a large pair of wings when he hits
Bankai and is very young. Michael is depicted with wings and a youthful
appearance.
- Hitsugaya can control water/ice with his zanpaktou, Michael is associated with water.
Archangel Gabriel = General Yamamoto
- Yamamoto's zanpaktou is fire-based, Gabriel is associated with fire.
- Gabriel is the chief of the angels. Yamamoto is the captain-commander of the Gotei 13.
- Gabriel is a messenger from God. Yamamoto, as the captain-commander,
seems to be the only shinigami who has some direct connection to Soul
Society's King or method to reach the King (e.g. knows where the King's
Key is).
Archangel Raphael = Shunsui/Unohana
- Raphael is associated with wind, Shunsui's zanpaktou is presumed to have wind-based abilities.
- Raphael is a healer and protector. Unohana is obviously a healer,
Shunsui is not the kind to kill, but rather protect; when facing Chad
as a ryoka, he offered not to fight him and he stopped Nanao from
harming him.
- Raphael is the angel of love, joy and light. Shunsui's and Unohana's
characters are those of people who are joyful and loving.
Archangel Uriel = Byakuya
- Uriel is associated with earth. Byakuya's zanpaktou is named after a
tree from the earth. To activate his bankai, he must drop his sword
into the earth.
- When Byakuya performs the final and most powerful form of his bankai,
he gains wings and a halo around his head, similar to an angel.
- Uriel is the angel of repentance, and hence is seen as pitiless.
Byakuya nearly sent his sister to be executed to follow the rules, and
has been depicted as an outwardly emotionless and uncaring character.
Archangel Selaphiel = Ukitake
- Selaphiel depicted with fish, Ukitake's zanpaktou resembles fishing javelins.
- Selaphiel is depicted in an attitude of humble prayer. Ukitake being ill is often humbled over.
Fallen Archangel Lucifer = Aizen
- Lucifer was an angel of light. Given that Aizen's zanpaktou can create illusions, he is therefore manipulating light.
- Aizen is attempting to lead a revolution against the King of Soul
Society and believes he can create stronger entities by making arrancar.
This is much the way Lucifer, driven by his own pride, tried to lead a revolution against God.
This is as far as I have gone. If you can find any other connections, all the more power to you.
P.S. If Aizen can be associated with fallen angels,
and he's one who has fallen by pride, does that make Isshin, a former
shinigami, a fallen angel by lust? He did have Ichigo and family by
Masaki who was only human. That means Ichigo is a Nephilim (offspring
of angels and humans).

Anyway. Yes Jews. Jews are God's people, and they get massacred pretty readily, just like the Quincy did. If someone was going to make a reference like this, I figure that's the only place a Quincy would fit in thus far.
